Von, a man living alone and a lover of games, has reached a breaking point. They've grown unhappy and are internally searching for some better version of themself, if it even exists. Everything changes thanks to the release of the Alterlyfe beta, the first ever fully immersive virtual reality game. While playing the game with their friend Mav, they become happier and develop many surprising feelings towards their friend. In the real world, their body begins changing, slowly gaining the features of their female avatar Laura Von each time they logout. Through playing the game of Alterlyfe, the barriers between Von and Laura Von crumble and they discover who they truly are.
